The Videos

I SHOULD WORK ON THE HOBBIT EPISODE 1 – HELLO, MR. JACKSON

I give a brief life story and explain why I want to work on The Hobbit so badly.

I SHOULD WORK ON THE HOBBIT EPISODE 2 – 10 REASONS

10 reasons I’m just like Peter Jackson. Skeptical? You may be surprised.

I SHOULD WORK ON THE HOBBIT EPISODE 3 – RECRUITMENT

I establish the guidelines that should be used when recruiting the crew of The Hobbit films.

I SHOULD WORK ON THE HOBBIT EPISODE 4 – GANDALF

In this video, someone engages in an argument with me, claiming that Dumbledore could beat Gandalf in a fight, and I utterly destroy them. If you, too, are mentally retarded, please watch this video for the good of society.

I SHOULD WORK ON THE HOBBIT EPISODE 5 – GANDALF (AGAIN)

I just wanted to re-iterate the point of the last video. Remember how Gandalf would wipe the floor with Dumbledore? Here’s my own little reenactment of how that would go. Enjoy!

I SHOULD WORK ON THE HOBBIT EPISODE 6 – ME ON SET

In this video, I list just a few of the many reasons I would be absolutely great to have on set. Helping actors get in character, sharing my in-depth knowledge even at the worst of times and places – there’s a lot of things I bring to the table.

I SHOULD WORK ON THE HOBBIT EPISODE 7 – RECRUITING DRAGONS

In this video, I make an ill-conceived attempt to recruit one of the last dragons in the greater Los Angeles area to work on The Hobbit film for Peter Jackson.

I SHOULD WORK ON THE HOBBIT EPISODE 8 – WELLINGTON, BABY!

My first video from Wellington!!! I bemoan the length of a trip across the Pacific, sleep through the end of the work week, and find the WETA Cave! What an exciting few days!

I SHOULD WORK ON THE HOBBIT EPISODE 9 – WELLINGTON PART 2

My second video from Wellington, in which I show some footage to prove that yes, I am actually here, and where I give a small demonstration of my Jedi powers to the non-believers who may be out there.

I SHOULD WORK ON THE HOBBIT EPISODE 10 – A TOUR OF MIDDLE-EARTH

In this video, I tell a funny story from the Elven extras casting call last Saturday. (Not that funny: I scared some non-Tolkien fanatics). I also introduce you to Jack Machiela of the Noldor blog who takes me on a tour of Mount Victoria, where a number of LOTR scenes were shot. An amazing tenth episode.

You’re really going for it, hope ya get it dude!

  2. Stefan HIll says:

Good luck bro. I worked on LotR’s and it was awesome. Just plain awesome. Er, did I mention it was awesome?

    • Oh my goodness! I’m not worthy! Got any old phone numbers kicking around you feel like hooking me up with?

      • Stefan Hill says:

I was only an extra Hobbit (well and Frodo for a couple of days – which landed me a spot in the credits). I see you are more after the actual filming side. My contacts are extra-hiring side. I did get to chat with Peter Jackson after they asked me to be a Frodo-standin, but I doubt he will remember me from mud.

        • Wow. I’m amazed. Don’t just brush off being a stand-in for the star of a major motion picture trilogy! I know some people back in L.A. who would kill for a credit like that.

Anyway, thanks for the encouragement, mate!

        • Sharon says:

HEY! I am in NZ now waiting to hear back about my submission. (They need tall woman who can ride horses so I flew over) :) ) How long did it take for you to hear back about being an extra?? And did you go through a casting agency? I signed with one here in Aukland last week. :) Thanks`Sharon

          • Stefan Hill says:

            Hi,

I think it was about 3 months from the auditions.

Good luck, it’s sorta cool, but sorta lots of early morning and LONG days. Still wouldn’t haven’t missed it for the World.

            Luck,
            S.

          • Stefan Hill says:

            Oh, no casing agency.

I was taking a friends sister to the auditions and got stuck in line. It wasn’t planned. The rest is history – oh she didn’t get called up… :)

  3. Blair says:

  4. Lily says:

  5. Kris says:

Watching these fantastic videos, can’t help but think the perfect fit would be a new job created just for you: video blogging on the making of the movie. How great would that be? Then we could keep the series going!

  6. Auntie Gloria says:

These blogs are fabulous! Your mother did the most outstanding job encouraging your reading, imagination, and creativity etc. I remember a letter you sent me several years ago and I was so impressed with your writing skills, so organized and thoughtful, as in FULL of thought! I wish you the all the happiness in the known universe and the underworld, with your project(s). Your daughter is so full of light, and she is so lucky to have you dor a DADDY! None of this is hyperbole! Go Garrett – Go Garrett- Go Garrett, GOGOGO!

  7. Diana Keller says:

Garrett, best of luck to you from Austin, Texas! Your Aunt Sybil sent out your you tube link!
Fantastic! Sending you positive energy this job is yours! You deserve it…
Love, Love, Love your enthusiasm! Best of luck to you

  8. Hey Garrett, good stuff! Good luck – great sense of humor. And you have desire. I will be keeping track of your success!

  9. nt says:

    learn to spell ‘Tolkien’, douche…

    • You know, I’m only human, and I’m only one man, with no editor to catch typos. A little constructive feedback with where I misspelled it would be more than welcome, as I certainly don’t want to besmirch the name. Where did I misspell it?

    • Auntie Gloria says:

Douche is rather a hostile word and lacks the civility of this blog, don’t you think? There is a generation of students who are not that excited about being great spellers; I know because I teach AP English.

  10. Jack M says:

Awesome vlog, mate… hey, if you REALLY want to prove you’re in Wellington, get hold of me, my email is on my blog profile. I’d LOVE to catch up in person! Also, we’re having a “we love The Hobbit” meeting on March 13th, so if you’re in Wellington, please turn up!

I LOVE your videos. You so deserve a job on the Hobbit, I am crossing my fingers for you!!! :)

  12. Cara B says:

    Hey, Garrett,

With the amount of sheer dedication, knowledge of all things Middle Earth and previous filming experience, I can’t see one reason why ‘Mr. Jackson’ wouldn’t consider you as part of his crew.

I wish you the best of luck! May the force be with you ;)

  13. joel says:

What happend? did u get a jobb? are you dead? have you gone home?

  14. Julian Ruiz says:

Hey!!!! did you got the job???? I am obsessed with the hobbit aswell and i will be fliying to NZ (from Venezuela!!!) also i am getting a Holiday Working Visa, please help me out mate!!!.

  15. Tracy Hindle says:

I went for the casting call in Matamata for extras many months ago along with hundreds of others. Just wondering if anyone got hired or called back?

  16. Anthony Le says:

i like where you’re going with the vblog and i hope you get it. but i think you should do more things off camera and record yourself like you did briefly in episode 7 and briefly in episode 10. the talking head gets boring. if you really want him to notice you, someone else has to notice you first, and tell him about you. and if you want someone else to notice you first, you have to be interesting enough to garner a social share. you can do it.

  17. hafed says:

Gandalf vs Dumbledore. Apparently some, well.. maybe everyone in mibba.com didn’t get the message, they say DUMBledore would pwn Gandalf. WTF!!!!!??? here’s the link : http://www.mibba.com/forums/topic/154238/1/

Garrett you have taken StarCon to the next level. For those of you who do not know what StarCon is, well it is an elite group of…….. well people. To gain entry to this exclusive club you will have to recite the names of the dwarves in the Hobbit.

    So, how are things going?

  21. Nick.de says:

Man, you are just great! I love your way of ‘performing’ in front of the camera, your passion and your love for Tolkiens/Jacksons work. I really hope that you achieve your goal to be part of the Hobbit-movie (at least the second one).

Stay your ground! One day, they have to recognize your skills and passion!
    Best wishes from Germany,
    Nick

P.S.: I am totally jealous of you being in NZ! Since I watched ‘The Fellowship’ when I was 13, I always wanted to visit this beautiful country! It is just amazing. I hope, that I will get the chance to see its incredible landscapes someday!

  22. Rob Stewart says:

Dude, I watched all of your videos and I have to say that if you put half the amount of energy into a real filmmaking job as you did in these videos then Mr Jackson would be crazy not to give you a job. I’m looking forward to the one where you’re squealing like a kid trapped in a lollie shop over night coz Peter has given you a job. Hey even if you don’t get it there’s always a possibility that you may get your ass on the Hobbit DVD special features section as the guy that got arrested for stalking Mr Jackson. Lol

  24. Kristina Urbano says:

So much dedication as seen in your videos! Did Peter Jackson ever contact you? because if he didn’t then he doesn’t know what he’s missing out on. I would love to work on the Hobbit, but I have to finish high school (though if given the opportunity, I think I too would drop out of school, though maybe not sell myself on the streets, haha). Can’t wait for the movie this December!
